Whitaker Center Announces NEW Lineup of Science Programming for All!

Whitaker Center Welcomes You to 2025: A Lineup So Exciting It’s Practically a Science Buffet!

By Rachael Benion, publisher, Macaroni KID Harrisburg and West Shore January 8, 2025

When I heard the news about Whitaker Center’s new programming, I actually squealed. No joke—I immediately texted my tween, who, for the first time in recorded history, is ALMOST as excited as I am. And get this—he’s not even pretending to be too cool to care. It’s like Whitaker has put together the ultimate science buffet, and we are hungry for every single course.

From glow-in-the-dark experiments to LEGO robotics, Whitaker Center’s January lineup is like an all-you-can-learn smorgasbord for curious minds of all ages. Whether you’re looking for hands-on family fun, engaging programs for your kids, or something to keep everyone from climbing the walls this winter, Whitaker has it covered.

Here’s what’s happening this month—prepare to feast on these incredible offerings:

NEW Educational Programs!

Sidekick Scientists (Grades K-2)

It’s time to suit up, parents, because you’re officially sidekicks to your pint-sized scientists! Together, you and your little one will tackle STEAM challenges, games, and art projects while learning about the environment and nature right here in Central PA. Think superhero training camp but with fewer capes and more environmental heroics. Bonus: it’s the perfect excuse to unleash your inner nerd without judgment.

LEGO Spike Robotics (Grades 3-8)

What’s better than stepping on LEGOs at home? Watching your kids actually do something constructive with them! In this four-session program, kids aged 9-13 will build and program robotic creations using LEGO Spike. It’s creativity, technology, and enough “cool factor” to make your tweens forget they ever rolled their eyes at you. (Just wait until they try to teach you how to use the programming app.)

Sustainable Solutions (Grades 4-8)

Got a kid with a big heart and even bigger ideas? This is their moment to shine. This program tackles real-world problems like climate change and biodiversity loss, turning them into exciting challenges your kids can solve with their peers. Who knows? You might end up raising the next environmental game-changer—or at least a kid who stops asking you to drive them literally everywhere.

Game On @ The Zone (Ages 10+)

If your kids are begging for more screen time, here’s the perfect compromise. Game On @ The Zone turns Whitaker Center into gaming heaven one Friday night each month. Families can join in to learn, play, and bond over popular games, or you can let the experts take over while you grab a coffee from Strawberry Square and finally check your emails in peace. Pro tip: those cappuccinos taste even better when paired with guilt-free alone time.

Scout Sundays at Whitaker (Grades K-12)

For parents of Scouts, this is a dream come true. From painting to robotics, these workshops are designed to help your Daisy, Brownie, Cub, or Junior earn their badges with hands-on, engaging activities. And here’s the best part: no glitter glue explosions in your house. (You’re welcome.)

Whitaker Center Goes to the PA Farm Show!

Think you know everything about cows? Think again! Whitaker Center is bringing Cow Stomach Science to the PA Farm Show on January 10th. Moo on over to MooU in the Calving Corner and check out these fascinating educational activities. (Warning: your kids might try to explain ruminant digestion at the dinner table later. You’ve been warned.)

MLK Day of Reading (FREE Event)

Books, books, and more books! On January 20th, Whitaker Center is hosting the MLK Day of Reading in partnership with the American Literacy Corporation. With nearly 20 reading locations and a grand finale at Whitaker, this event offers something for everyone—and kids under 12 leave with a brand-new book. Pro tip: bring a tote bag. And maybe some tissues—there’s nothing quite like watching a kid light up over their very own book.

Winter Glow Exhibit

Starting January 17th, Whitaker Center will literally light up your imagination with its Winter Glow Exhibit. Glow-in-the-dark experiments, mesmerizing installations, and interactive displays make this exhibit an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike. Just try not to touch everything—you won’t want to leave.

And Wait, There’s MORE!

When you add this lineup to Whitaker Center’s amazing existing programs, it becomes the destination for every kiddo in your family:

  • Tiny Tots: A “Grown-Up and Me” program for toddlers (ages 2 and under), introducing little ones to science through singing, reading, and exploring themed activities. Plus, time in the KidsPlace exhibit is included!
  • Little Learners: For preschoolers (ages 3-6), this interactive program is packed with experiments, songs, and creative hands-on fun—all designed to sharpen those budding science skills.
  • Code Bytes: Perfect for aspiring coders and gaming enthusiasts, this workshop series uses video games to teach coding, computer science, and STEAM concepts. It’s where screen time meets skill building!

The Bottom Line:

Whitaker Center is setting the bar high for 2025, and we’re here for it. Whether your kids are obsessed with robotics, ready to game the night away, or just starting their science journey in Tiny Tots, there’s something for everyone.

So, grab your calendar, pack up your curiosity, and swing by Strawberry Square for a coffee before diving into all Whitaker Center has to offer. Because nothing says “parent of the year” like a day filled with glowing exhibits, coding workshops, and zero tantrums. Whitaker Center is waiting—see you there!
