Storm Devastates Key Fundraiser for Neurodivergent Community Center

Neurodiverse Network Pushes Forward with New Community Center Opening After Setback

New Cumberland, PA – September 22, 2024 – Neurodiverse Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and resources for neurodivergent individuals and their families, is set to open its brand-new community center in less than two weeks. This center, located in New Cumberland, will provide a safe and inclusive space for families to access educational resources, peer support, and social events tailored for neurodivergent individuals.

However, the organization recently suffered a significant setback. On the night of September 21, 2024, a tornado-level storm hit during the York Fairy Festival, where Neurodiverse Network had set up a calming tent for festival-goers as well as a fundraising station. The storm caused extensive damage, destroying hundreds of dollars’ worth of supplies and materials, and forced the cancellation of the event—resulting in a major loss of expected donations that were crucial to the community center’s opening.

Neurodiverse Network wasn’t the only organization affected by the storm; several other businesses and nonprofits were also hit hard. The community is now coming together to support those impacted, demonstrating the power of resilience and collaboration.

"We will not let this storm stop us.  Our mission is too important, and we are determined to open the doors to this new center. This space will be a haven for neurodivergent individuals and their families, offering support, connection, and understanding."

About the Community Center

The Neurodiverse Network Community Center will provide:

  • A sensory-friendly playroom with equipment designed for people of all ages to test and use.
  • A range of sensory tools, life skill aids, calming products, and educational resources.
  • Regular events, including peer support groups, parenting programs, and social activities tailored for neurodivergent individuals.

Upcoming fall programs include:

  • Tot Time
  • Pre-K Play
  • Kids Community Club
  • Yoga
  • New Skill Saturdays
  • Parents’ Night Out (a rare opportunity for parents of children with additional needs to enjoy some much-needed rest and self-care).

The center will be a daily resource for families, creating a strong and stable community where neurodivergent individuals can connect and thrive.

A Personal Connection

For families like that of Rachael Benion, article author, Neurodiverse Network has been a lifeline. "This organization has done so much for my son, Rhys," said Rachael. "They see him for the beautiful, unique individual he is. Neurodiverse Network doesn’t just provide resources—they provide community and culture, and they’ve been with us every step of the way."

Call for Donations

The storm’s devastation and the loss of a key fundraising event have placed an extra burden on the organization, but Neurodiverse Network is pressing forward with their goal of opening the community center on time. To help recover from the damage and loss of donations, the organization is calling for support from the community.

"The same reason I ask you to wear red, not blue, and to sport the infinity sign instead of the puzzle piece is why I ask you now to donate," said. "Neurodiverse Network knows my child is autistic, knows he’s disabled, but they will never see him as ‘less.’ They will simply be there to help him and celebrate him for who he is."

Even small donations can have a big impact, ensuring that the center opens on time and provides vital resources to families in the area. Please consider donating today to help Neurodiverse Network continue its mission of fostering an inclusive and supportive community.
