What is a StoryWalk® Trail?

A StoryWalk® Trail is like a treasure hunt where the treasure is a good book. The concept, created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, has spread like wildflowers across the country. Here’s how it works:

  • Books on Display: Pages from a children’s book are displayed in weather-resistant stands along a walking trail. Imagine each step forward is like turning the page of a book.
  • Sequential Reading: As you meander along the path, you read each page, letting the story unfold alongside the sights and sounds of nature.
  • Engaging Experience: It’s the perfect blend of physical activity and literacy, making reading an active, shared adventure for children and adults alike.

StoryWalk® Trails are designed to make reading a shared, outdoor activity, encouraging families to cherish both the beauty of a well-told story and the wonders of the natural world. It’s a delightful opportunity to cultivate a love of books while enjoying the fresh air and scenic views.

Tips for Enjoying Your StoryWalk Adventure

  • Check for Updates: StoryWalk® Trails often feature different books throughout the year. So, unless you want to be that person halfway through a walk thinking, “Wait, haven’t we read this before?” check the park’s website. No one wants to be caught rereading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” for the millionth time—unless you really, really love caterpillars.
  • Dress Comfortably: Channel your inner adventurer with comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate gear. Remember, flip-flops are great for the beach, but not so much for a mile-long hike with kids who will undoubtedly ask you to carry them halfway through. Also, a raincoat might just save you from becoming the star of your very own soggy tale.
  • Bring Snacks and Water: For my crew, this is non-negotiable, especially if you don’t want to become the villain in your own story. Hunger turns happy little readers into grumpy gremlins faster than you can say, “We’ll eat when we get home.” Pack snacks and water, because dehydration and reading don’t mix.
  • Engage with the Story: Encourage your kids to talk about the book as you walk. Ask them questions like, “What do you think happens next?” or “Which character would you invite to dinner?” Pro tip: If you ask your 5-year-old about the story, prepare for a plot twist you never saw coming. Who knew “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” was actually about time-traveling dinosaurs?
  • Respect the Trail: Follow any guidelines posted along the trail, and try not to disrupt the story with your own epic tale of how you bravely avoided stepping on that giant, scary bug. Also, be kind to other walkers—they’re here for a peaceful read, not a live-action reenactment of “Jumanji.”

Final Thoughts

StoryWalk® Trails are more than just a fun family outing—they’re a celebration of two things that make life rich: the beauty of nature and the joy of a good book. These trails offer an engaging and educational experience, turning a simple walk into a literary adventure. With several StoryWalk® Trails available in Cumberland and Dauphin Counties, there’s plenty of opportunity to explore new stories while savoring the splendor of your local parks. So lace up your walking shoes, gather your loved ones, and embark on a journey that nurtures both the mind and the spirit!
