New Cumberland Library has shared a huge listing of fun events for kids and families happening in November. Some of these events require advance registration.


Tails & Tales Summer Reading Challenge
June 7-Aug 6, 2021 on Beanstack - For all ages
Join the library’s summer learning program, featuring a reading challenge, outdoor in-person activities, fun take-home kits, a summer of STEAM activities, and virtual events including family paint party, ZooAmerica, Kit’s Interactive Theatre, Turtle Dance Music & More! Participants who register for the children’s program by June 7 will be entered in a raffle to win a Hersheypark Ticket Prize Pack! Then, just read and complete fun activities all summer long for a chance to win great activity prizes, weekly prizes, and grand prizes! Register to participate beginning May 17 at newcumberlandlibrary.beanstack.org

Ready for K! - 8 Week Series beginning June 14
For children entering Kindergarten in Fall 2021 - Registration required.
New Cumberland Public Library invites children who are entering kindergarten in fall 2021 to participate in our 8-week kindergarten readiness program. Participants will receive supplies & materials necessary to complete fun learning activities and crafts to work on the academic, emotional, and motor skills they will need to succeed at school. Space is limited and registration is required. Each week a new packet of materials will be available to pick up from the Library. Packets will be supplemented with online stories and resources. After registering, you will be contacted by library staff with instructions for pick-up of materials and weekly packets. 

Sidewalk Chalk Obstacle Course - Week of June 7
For all ages - No registration necessary
We are turning the Library’s sidewalks into a giant sidewalk chalk obstacle course. Come run, jump, skip, hop, balance, and stomp your way through the course! Stop in the Library after you finish and tell us the secret code for a prize!

Weekly Take & Make Activity Kits - Weeks of June 7, 14, 21, & 28
For children ages 3-7 - No registration necessary; while supplies last
Stop in the children’s room and pick up a kit with crafts and activities all about tails & tales! Each kit will include the materials and instructions you need for several crafts and activities related to the theme, as well as items chosen specifically to help children develop age appropriate literacy skills such as letter sounds, number recognition, fine motor skills, and more.

Babies, Blankets, & Books - Tuesdays, June 8, 15, July 6 & 13, 9:15 a.m.
For babies ages 6-23 months - Registration required
Bring your own blanket, chair, or towel to sit on & join us outside on the Library grounds while you enjoy books, songs, and action rhymes with your baby. Space is limited and registration is required. *weather permitting

Inspired by Nature Activity: Flower Art  - Tuesday, June 8, 10:30 a.m. *
For children ages 3-7 - Registration Required
Join us for fun nature-inspired activities and crafts outside on the Library grounds. We will be creating several pieces of art from leaves, flowers, and other natural materials. Space is limited and registration is required. *weather permitting

Family Paint Party! On Zoom - Thursday, June 10, 10:30 a.m.
For families with children of all ages - Registration Required
Join us online for a family paint party! A simple, family-friendly painting project related to our summer Tails & Tales theme will be explained step-by-step by our art instructor. You’ll have your very own masterpiece in about 30 minutes! Space is limited and registration is required. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions. To participate, you'll need a computer or mobile device with a microphone and optional camera.

Screen on the Green: Toy Story 4 - Friday, June 11: 7:30-10:30 p.m.
For families with children of all ages - No registration required
Free outdoor movies are back this summer in New Cumberland! We’ve teamed up with Build a Better New Cumberland and the Borough of New Cumberland to host the first outdoor movie of the summer on the beautiful Library grounds.  Come kick off our summer reading program and relax & enjoy the film! Arrive as early at 7:30pm to claim your spot on the grass, get signed up for our summer challenge, and take part in some kid-friendly activities, like our sidewalk obstacle course. The movie will start as soon as it's dark enough, usually around 8:45pm. Rain date is Saturday, June 12. 

Backyard Scavenger Hunt - Week of June 14
For children ages 3-10 - No registration required
Stop in the children’s room to pick up a copy of our backyard scavenger hunt or visit our website to download a copy. Find any place full of nature – your backyard, a park, or a trail – and mark as many items as you can find! Return the sheet to the children’s desk by June 19 to pick up a small prize.

Grab & Go STEAM: Constellations - Week of June 14
For children ages 7-12 - Registration required
Explore the sky in your backyard with this grab & go STEAM kit all about stars and constellations. 

Inspired by Nature Activity: Weather  - Tuesday, June 15, 10:30 a.m. *
For children ages 3-7 - Registration required
Join us for fun nature-inspired activities and crafts outside on the Library grounds. We will be exploring clouds and wind with two crafts you can make, try out, and take home to keep! Space is limited and registration is required.  *weather permitting

Kit’s Interactive Theatre Virtual Performance: Mother Nature - Week of June 14
For families with children ages 3+ - Registration required
Register to receive a link to watch Kitty Jones perform her one-woman show “Mother Nature.” The program combines improvisation, dance, and music where audience members are cast right into the show! Registrants can pick up a special take-and-make activity from the Library to complement the performance. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions. To participate, you'll need a computer or mobile device with a microphone and optional camera.

Grab & Go STEAM: Bristlebots - Week of June 21
For ages 8-12 - Registration Required
Create your own zippy bot in minutes with this Grab & Go STEAM kit! Bristlebots are a fun way to learn about basic engineering, motor, circuits, and principles of balance. Creating a bot is simple, just attach the parts to the tooth brush head and watch them go. You can experiment and change the way they move and behave by adjusting the balance and pipe cleaners. This project contains small parts and batteries: for kids ages 8-12 only, please. Registration is required and limited.

Unicorns: Break the Cage Virtual Performance - Thursday, June 24, 10:30 a.m.
For families with children ages 3+ - Registration required
Join the Library as Talewise takes us on a wild adventure about two kids who visit the city zoo and discover all sorts of incredible animals, including a horse who knows in its heart that it’s truly a unicorn. The animals join forces to stand up to the tyrannical Zoo Owner — but do they have what it takes to leave their cages forever? The fun animated story segues into fascinating science concept segments about life sciences and animals, so you won’t only be entertained — you'll learn something, too! Dinosaur Storytime (Virtual) - Monday, June 28, 10:30 a.m. on ZOOM
For ages 3-6 - Registration required
Join us for a special virtual storytime all about dinosaurs! Featuring stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs, storytime teaches social skills, listening comprehension, letter and number recognition, and vocabulary. Join us on ZOOM for a live 20-25 minute storytime experience. We’ll have fun while building a foundation for reading success. Registration is required and limited. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions before the first session. 

Grab & Go STEAM: Hydraulic Claw - Week of June 28
For ages 8-12 - Registration Required
Design and build a hydraulic claw that works just like the games in an arcade! Experiment with hydraulics and engineering with this STEAM kit! Decide between an accordion, chopsticks, or pincer style claw, assemble, and test. Move the upper cylinder and watch your claw open and close below. We’ll provide a comprehensive guide to get you started, but the final claw design is up to you. Can you design a claw to pick up specific objects (worms, marshmallows, balls)? This project is for kids ages 8-12 only, please. Registration is required and limited.

Grab & Go STEAM: Junior Paleontologist - Week of June 28
For ages 5-8 - Registration Required
Younger children can join in on the summer Grab & Go STEAM with this special dinosaur packed kit just for ages 5-8. Junior paleontologists will first conduct a dig to discover a dinosaur, then create a dinosaur habitat complete with a volcano. This STEAM activity is designed for younger children; ages 5-8 only please. Registration is required and limited.

Teachers of Nature: What’s Up With Your Tail? Virtual Program - Tuesday, June 29, 10:30 a.m. on ZOOM  
For families with children ages 3+ - Registration required
Have you ever wondered why animals have tails and what they are used for? The answer is really interesting! Join zookeeper Cindi Cavallini and her live animals in this interactive virtual program to learn about the different uses that animals have for their tails and how they use them. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions. To participate, you'll need a computer or mobile device with a microphone and optional camera.

Teen Paint Party! on ZOOM - Tuesday, June 29, 4:00 p.m.
For ages 12-17 - Registration required
Join us for a teens-only paint party! A painting project related to our summer Tails & Tales theme will be explained step-by-step by our art instructor. You’ll have your very own completed masterpiece in about 30 minutes plus a mandala canvas to complete on your own. All materials & supplies will be available to pick up from the Library before the event. Space is limited and registration is required. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link, password, and further instructions. To participate, you'll need a computer or mobile device with a microphone and optional camera.
