Storytimes Near Harrisburg, Hershey and the East Shore

Looking for storytimes near Harrisburg, Hershey, Hummelstown, Middletown or Elizabethtown? This guide gathers local library storytimes, bookstore events, nature programs and other read-aloud fun for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their grown-ups.

I have five kids, which means I have spent a statistically significant portion of my adult life sitting crisscross applesauce while one child listened, one child shouted the ending, and at least one child quietly attempted an escape toward the circulation desk. Storytime was still one of my favorite outings. It got us out of the house, put new books into little hands and gave me a completely valid reason to plan the rest of the morning around snacks.

The best part is that Central PA families have a lot of choices. Some storytimes are designed for babies and busy toddlers. Others add music, movement, crafts, sensory play or a visit from a local author. Most library programs are free, but registration rules and schedules can change. Use the live calendar first, then click through to the host's page before loading everyone into the car.

Storytime is about much more than sitting quietly. It gives children a chance to hear new stories, practice listening and enjoy books alongside other local families.

Hershey and Middletown

The best storytimes invite children to move, answer questions, sing, pretend and become part of the story.

Elizabethtown

Sometimes the best part of storytime is what happens afterward, when a child finds the book they absolutely must examine one more time.

Other places to find storytimes

Libraries are the most dependable starting point, but they are not the only places that open a picture book and invite a crowd of small people to make animal noises.

Some local storytimes include costumes, characters, music or other little touches that make opening a book feel like an event.

  • Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe in Harrisburg: Watch for free Little Scholar storytimes, children's author visits, book parties and signings. Check children's events.
  • Independent bookstores and bookshops: Author tours and new picture-book releases can bring one-time storytimes to local shops. Check the host's event page and the live calendar above.
  • Nature centers and parks: Wildwood Park, Dauphin County parks and other nature centers sometimes pair a book with a walk, animal encounter or preschool nature lesson. Check Wildwood Park events and Dauphin County Parks events.
  • Museums and attractions: Family programs at museums may include stories, character visits or book-based activities, especially around holidays and school breaks.
  • Farm markets, play spaces and community centers: These programs are often seasonal or pop-up events. Check registration carefully because capacity may be smaller than at a library.
  • Local author events: Picture-book authors sometimes visit bookstores, libraries, schools and festivals. These can be especially fun for children who are ready to ask the author seventeen questions, fourteen of which are actually comments.

Storytime does not have to happen inside. Nature programs and outdoor events often combine books with exploration, animals or a walk through the woods.

A few storytime survival tips

  • Check the age range. Baby storytime, toddler storytime and preschool storytime can feel very different.
  • Look for registration. Free does not always mean drop-in, especially when crafts or limited seating are involved.
  • Confirm before leaving. Weather, holidays and session breaks can change the schedule.
  • Arrive a few minutes early. This gives everyone time to find the children's room, remove coats and debate which grown-up gets to hold the emergency snack.
  • Do not worry about perfect sitting. Storytime is built for children. Wiggling, joining in and needing a quick hallway reset are all normal.
